NS 11101.1 Labelling and Declaration of Environmental Attributes of Building Products—Type 1 Product Category Ecolabel Standard - Masonry Products.
Throughout 2014, NSDO's Masonry Product Category Working Group supervised the technical work underpinning the Standard. The baseline assessment, NS MP 101-1, included a life cycle impact assessment of a broad range of different masonry products used in equivalent applications in the Australian building industry. The Working Group members are specialists in the field of masonry who contributed industry knowledge and supervised the work. They defined a functional unit for masonry to compare different products on a fair basis across the product life cycle of masonry in regard to relevant environmental impacts.
This technical basis was published recently as a miscellaneous publication, NS MP 101-1. The functional unit for masonry was determined by examining the range of variation of product parameters and performance among masonry products available commercially in Australia. The assessment allows for various climatic zones around the continent. The environmental impact categories were defined by sensitivity analysis of the energy, materials and chemicals that contribute most to environmental effects caused by masonry products.
The significance of having a Standard for a Type I Australian ecolabel for masonry is that it provides a uniform basis for comparison. It enables a masonry label to indicate multiple environmental criteria (not just single issues and simplistic impacts). An ecolabel set in accordance with this Standard can distinguish the best Australian masonry products overall.
